Karn Azrack

This is a 42 room, abandoned dwarven fortress, atop a mountain and containing a white dragon.

The treasure is too much for a level 3 dungeon, but that's because of the dragon's horde and since the dragon is quite nasty, I'm inclined to allow the excess loot and good luck to the party that tries to steal it.

Here's the map:

Temple of Bast

This is my entry into the Adventure Site Contest III. It's a 24 room, ruined, cat god temple, written for D&D BECMI / Rules Cyclopedia.

Here is the above ground map:

Tomb of the Animalism Cult

This is a short, 8 room tomb for level 3 characters to plunder. It's written for D&D BECMI. There's an intended path through the tomb, getting the keys in the "correct" order, but my play test group used flight to bypass rooms.

Here's the map:

House of the Rat

This is a 63 room, abandoned mansion for level 4 characters to ransack. It's written for D&D BECMI / Rules Cyclopedia, but should work for B/X etc. As the title implies, there are lots of rats. Better bring some silvered weapons for this one.

Here are the maps:

Grim Hollow

This is a 59 room, BFRPG dungeon for level 1 characters to pillage. There should be ample treasure for a party of 5 to hit level 2 (assuming the gold for XP optional rule in BFRPG).

Here's the map:

Sphere of Avantarr

I wrote this rolling dungeon for the 2024 One Page Dungeon Contest. It got an honourable mention which made me very happy.

Kubuk Mill

I went to visit the National Slate Museum in Llanberis recently and saw their massive, working water wheel. This is a little dungeon all about making a water wheel turn again.

Gadwick's Tribute

This is a two page dungeon that I wrote for the Delightful Dungeon Contest. I quite like the way it turned out, but it might be a little heavy on the petrification.

Here's the review it got.

Mourndeep Caverns

This was a bit of an experiment in dungeon map generation.

To make the dungeon I generated three stacked dungeon layers. Each layer used a dice drop to generate randomly placed rooms which I linked up with corridors to form a minimum spanning tree.

Next I added the shortest corridor I could to form a loop on each layer. Then I linked the layers up at points where their rooms were closest, with stairs.

I found the result to be pleasingly twisty with lots of corridors running underneath higher layers. Should be fun to map.

For stocking, I used the D30 DM Companion for the monsters and BFRPG for treasure.
Finally, I checked my encounter difficulties with Frank Mentzer's algorithm from Dungeon magazine ("Plan it by the numbers" page 16).

Here's the map:

Sausages of the Devil Swine

This is a silly, 16 room, pig themed dungeon, set below a town. It's stocked for 4, level 5 BFRPG characters and contains a couple of new monsters.

Here's the map:

And here's the mini-module: Sausages of the Devil Swine

Update: I entered a condensed, B/X version of this module in the Adventure Site Contest II.
Here it is: Sausages of the Devil Swine (B/X)

Here are the reviews:
Update: Wow! The B/X version was judged worthy enough to be included in the top 8 entries, and as such is available in the content compilation on DriveThru RPG here.

Update: A year later and here's another review of the module, along with its siblings in the Adventure Site Contest II compilation.

Maze of the Bloody Wizard

This was my entry in the No Artpunk III contest. It's an attempt to write a dungeon for high level play and you can find the review of the dungeon here. I was pretty happy with how this one turned out.

The dungeon contains 39 rooms and is stocked for 5 level 9 BFRPG characters (but it should convert to B/X or similar games with no problems).

Here's the map (it's a big one by my standards):

Warren of the Wicked Warlord

This one started out as me mucking about with the dungeon generator from the excellent solo game Four Against Darkness. I cut off some dead ends and corridors that snaked off the map, added some twists and connections to a second level then populated it with ancient Egyptian themed orcs and undead.
Next thing I know, it's grown into a short module for BFRPG (about right for level 6).

Here are the maps:

Shrine of the Razor Gnomes

This started out as a death-trap tomb complex, but mutated, as I wrote it, into a shrine to a gnomish god of traps. It's designed for 2nd level parties but some of the traps and monsters are nasty and need clever play to avoid or defeat. Time for the party thief to earn his share of the loot.

Here's the map:

The Gloom Pits

This multi-level dungeon is inspired by running the brilliant mini-mega-dungeon Dyson's Delve.
My own effort isn't as deep as "The Delve" but is maybe a bit weirder in places.
Fair warning: The dungeon contains energy draining and poison.

I took random dungeon names from this generator to give me themes for the levels.
Next, I connected the levels using Fate dice and the random system linking procedure in the RPG Diaspora. I even did some simple illustrations.

Here are the maps:

Nantrin Gorr's School of Unlearning

I was thinking about minotaurs in D&D the other day and wondering where do they find all the mazes they need to lair in? Then the thought struck me, maybe the presence of a minotaur mutates a structure into a maze.

So, here's a maze-like one page dungeon, featuring a minotaur lairing in a school. It's themed around a sort of reverse academic god of ignorance.

Here's the map:

Death Talon Lair

A while ago I was tinkering with a hex map and I wanted some inspiration for dungeons to put on it.
I used a random dungeon name generator and one of the suggestions it gave was "Death Talon Lair".
The dungeon itself was next to a swamp, so I thought that Death Talon could be a Black Dragon.

I asked myself, what sort of creatures would co-exist with a Black Dragon? Well, the dragon is immune to its own breath weapon which in this case is acid. Oozes and slimes attack with acid, so I thought maybe a Black Dragon would lair alongside them, using them as a natural defence.

Here's the map:

Mutants of the Mad Mastermind

If you don't like a bit of Sci-Fi in your fantasy you might want to skip this one.

I've had the maps for this one drawn up for ages, but for some reason found the stocking difficult to finish.
There are multiple maps, new monsters and mutations, so this has grown to 8 pages.

The module is compatible with B/X retro-clones and is printer friendly. It is about right for level 4 player characters.

Here are the maps:

Trove of the Triumphant Troglodytes

This one got too big for a single page, so it's a two page dungeon.
I'm OK with that because you can print it out and staple the pages together as a two page spread.

This time I used the excellent Grid-Mapper to create the map, instead of drawing and scanning it.
I like how clear the map is, but I'm not sure which map style I prefer.

Still compatible with the B/X family of old school retro-clones.
Monsters and treasure should be about right for level 2 player parties.
Still black and white to make it home printer friendly.

Getting better handling Scribus. It's even got a picture in it.

Here's the map on its own:

Lair of the Lamentable Leech Lord

OK. I'll admit it. This is a one page dungeon based on a pun.

The dungeon is compatible with the B/X family of old school retro-clones because this seems to be the lingua franca of the OSR.
Monsters and treasure should be about right for level 4 player parties.
I've kept this black and white to make it home printer friendly.

This is the first thing I've produced in Scribus and, compared to just using Google Docs, I found the learning curve pretty steep.

Here's the map on its own:

Vault of the Forgotten King

This was my entry for the 2022 One Page Dungeon Contest.

"Folks say the Old King was rich and that he descended into his tomb with his treasure, to spend his last days counting it.

Right minded folks shun the barrows, but maybe there's a fortune to be made there by the quick, strong or lucky."

Here's the map for you to key with your own twisted abominations.
